How Is A Genioplasty Procedure Performed?

A Genioplasty procedure can be done in about 2-3 hours and the patient is required to stay at the clinic/ hospital for a day post surgery. The patient is adviced to take an off from work for at least a week after surgery in order to avoid any post surgical complications. The patient can get back to his normal day to day activities after 5-6 weeks.
The procedure can be performed using Local, IV sedation or General anesthesia. Usually, local anesthesia is used for small procedures. Local anesthesia also eliminates the risk of a pulmonary embolism and excess blood loss during surgery.
Enhancement of the chin depends upon the requirement and need of the patient, i.e. if the patient wishes to increase or decrease volume. This will be done either by adding or subtracting bone from the chin region or using implants.
After the patient has been sedated using local/ general anesthesia, a small incision will be made by the surgeon where he had previously made the surgical markings, either on the inside of the mouth or outside on the face around the chin, depending upon the kind of procedure, requirement of the patient and the placement of implants. Using a sterilized clamp, the implant will be inserted. The incision is closed using sutures. The scars caused by sutures are temporary and will disappear in time. The incision area will be covered using a bandage, which the patient will be required to wear at all times for a couple of days after the procedure to ensure proper healing.
A Genioplasty or Chin Augmentation/ Chin Enhancement procedure can also be performed in compilation with a rhinoplasty or nose surgery, Lip augmentation, neck lift or a rhitedectomy.

What Are The Pre And Post Operative Instructions?

The potential risks and complications of surgery are rare but the most common ones range all the way from simple swelling to rejection of the implants by the body.
