Ear Surgery in Miami by Top Plastic Surgeons

Otoplasty, commonly known as ear surgery, is performed to get rid of prominent ears as well as to get rid of any extra cartilage in the ear. Sometimes the ear seems to appear bigger in proportion as compared to the rest of the face. People suffering from this issue can undergo an otoplasty to achieve better, smaller ears. The otoplasty procedure can be performed on either one or both ears. An otoplasty can also be performed when a patient is suffering from a weakness of the cartilage or a deformed cartilage which makes the ears appears to droop or lop. It appears due to a weakness in the upper cartilage area, making the upper helical rim ‘droop’ or ‘flop’ instead of lying near the head. To make the earlobe appear less prominent and protruding, an ear surgery should be considered. Thousands of people every year undergo otoplasty to get rid of their ear deformities, size and shape.

HOW IS AN OTOPLASTY PERFORMED ?

Adults and teenagers can also go for this type of surgery as long as they are in good health.

Depending on the plastic surgeon, the anesthesia used can be general, IV sedation or local. Any child or adult can undergo this procedure, once the ear is developed.

The ear is altered by creating an incision behind the earlobe on the cartilage. After making the incision, the cartilage is reshaped and the incision is closed using dissolvable sutures. The scar that remains disappears with time and is almost invisible as the incision will be made behind the ear. In some rare cases, the incision is made in front of the earlobe, using dissolvable sutures making the scar disappear in a short period of time.

The surgery can be performed in about 3-4 hours and the patient can resume normal activities after a couple of days. After the procedure, the patient will be required to wear a head bandage to minimalise swelling and ensure faster healing.
